William Henderson - 05/10/2009 I bought the stainless steel version of this rack, which seems to no longer be available at Petra. Anyway, it is a great rack for the money (about 1/2 the cost of similar racks by Tubus or Nitto) though it has a couple minor drawbacks:
- The top is not very long and doesn't give you much room to strap too.
- The struts are quite long and (on my bike) poke way up above the top, which could damage your load (a therma-rest, say). I saw'd mine off and they've been fine since.
- The feet brackets are poorly designed with sharp edges sticking out. This quickly wore a hole into my Ortlieb panniers. I noticed this and flipped the brackets around backwards (inside the rack, facing IN). Haven't had an issue since.
So if you don't mind those minor issues, this is a great rack for the money. I've taken it many thousand miles, with heavy loads, and there's never been an issue. Panniers sit low and fairly far back, clipping is not an issue for me (big bike with longish chain stays, though). |
